I’m sure that I wasn’t the only disabled person who was completely shocked and worried by the cuts announced in the Comprehensive Spending Review last Wednesday. In fact, I know I wasn’t. I expected the cuts to be harsh but still found that their level and type surprised me. I know that was probably naïve of me but it’s true. I was concerned that the government admitted that they hadn’t done a full review of the impact these cuts were likely to have on the disabled people of this country (bearing in mind here that we’re thought to number one sixth of the total UK population).

There seems to be a big thing in the eyes of the public about the negatives of disability. It’s terrible and we’re those poor little people who can’t do anything and need to be pitied. They say they couldn’t imagine anything worse and they really don’t want to be disabled, that sort of thing. I’m sure there’s not a disabled person (or parent/relative/friend/carer of a disabled person) reading this who hasn’t experienced that or read about it in the papers/online.
