Children in the Picture

Scope’s In the Picture campaign raises awareness of the need to include disabled children in the books they read. It has 10 guiding principles that are based on the social model of disability.

We’ve produced:

  • a list of early years picture books that feature disabled characters
  • an image bank to inspire authors and illustrators, including examples of good practice, photos for reference and children’s drawings
  • resources including FAQs and lesson plans for teachers
  • an exhibition of colourful works from leading artists, all featuring images of disabled children
  • links to useful websites
