Paul's story

Aspiring athlete faces extra sporting hurdles

Paul Carter, has had a passion for sport since he was young so naturally he jumped at the chance to take up target shooting professionally.

It felt as though his years of training had finally paid off when the medals started rolling in.

Sadly Paul’s success was short-lived. The miles he had to travel to train at a suitable leisure centre began to take a toll.

Paul knew if he was to progress as a semi-professional, he would need further financial support to fund the kind of high-tech adaptations he needed in order to make shooting accessible at the highest level.

Sadly, the support was not forthcoming to help Paul go that extra mile and realise his dream.

Paul says provision for aspiring paralympic athletes can be patchy.

"Most of the focus is on supporting elite athletes but there is little support out there to help those at grass roots level to progress. That’s why I’ll be signing up to Scope’s petition for more inclusive sport."

If like Paul you have a passion for sport but access barriers have made it difficult for you to progress, we’d like to hear from you – maybe you’re a fan and can’t watch your favourite team or you’re a budding athlete and the funding or equipment you need simply isn’t available locally.

At Scope, we want to hear your story.
