Let's campaign on stage and screen: step by step
It simply isn’t fair that parents like Kelvin had to face obstacles to enjoy the latest blockbuster film, but he’s proof that by speaking up things will change for the better.
All credit to his local cinema for acting decisively and changing the way they do things. They recognised that they should do more to help their customers. It means disabled people in Birmingham can now enjoy a trip to the cinema without the headache of accessibility barriers.
All too often though, good examples like these aren’t publicised, leaving disabled people unsure what facilities are out there and leaving them unable to make informed decisions as consumers about which is the best entertainment venue to go for.
Step 1 – Go straight to the top
We want to change this. We are calling on major cinema and theatre chains to be transparent about access at their venues.
Use our simple online tool to send a message to Chief Executives calling on them to take action to improve the facilities for disabled customers.
Step 2 – Share your experiences
Have you had a similar experience to Kelvin? If so, we really want to hear from you. Tell us your experience of visiting your local cinema theatre by emailing campaigns@scope.org.uk.
Tell us your experiences (good and bad) today
Step 3 – Help us identify the Good Guys in your local area
Kelvin's story shows just how frustrating it can be to turn up at a cinema or theatre and find that the venue is inaccessible or that the members of staff are not trained to understand the needs of disabled people.
Help Scope shine a spotlight on accessibility by making sure that the next time you go to the cinema, theatre or to a music gig, you write a review of your experience online.
It’s really easy and takes only a few minutes.
Why not use online review site yelp.co.uk to find the best cinemas and theatres in the UK and review any that fall below the mark?
Simply log on to yelp.co.uk and get started writing reviews of local venues.
Step 4 – Celebrate local successes!
As well as getting your message out there online, we’ve made it really easy for you to influence your local cinema manager offline too.
Local managers are often best placed to make the small changes needed to make a big difference.
Why not follow Kelvin's example and take the direct approach in improving venue accessibility.
Use our letter template (Word document, 34KB) to write to your local gig, cinema or theatre venue to let them know if you’ve experienced any accessibility problems.
Happy viewing!
