Session 1 – Playground

In this task, the children draw pictures of themselves and add them to a group montage of an inclusive playground.

Difficulty level – easy!

The group leader will need:

  • A large sheet of sugar paper for the background
  • Some simple silhouettes of inclusive playground equipment or pictures cut out of magazines. There are examples of inclusive playground equipment in the In The Picture photo image bank.
  • A pile of A4 copy paper
  • Some coloured pencils
  • Glue sticks and scissors

Preparation

1. Cut out dark silhouettes of a wide slide, swing, wheelchair roundabout and seat and stick them onto the large background sheet.

2. Go out to play and then think/talk/remember playtime.

3. Show children the background picture and explain the task.

The task

1. Give each child a piece of paper and pencils and ask them to draw themselves – about eight to eleven centimetres tall works best!

2. When the drawings are finished an adult or the child [depending on age and ability] can cut out the pictures.

3. Each child will then stick their picture onto the playground background.

4. Everyone stands back and says – “We’re in the picture!”
