Session 1 – Playground

In this task, the children draw pictures of themselves and add them to a group montage of an inclusive playground.

Difficulty level – easy!

The group leader will need:

A large sheet of sugar paper for the background
Some simple silhouettes of inclusive playground equipment or pictures cut out of magazines. There are examples of inclusive playground equipment in the In The Picture photo image bank.
A pile of A4 copy paper
Some coloured pencils
Glue sticks and scissors

Preparation

1. Cut out dark silhouettes of a wide slide, swing, wheelchair roundabout and seat and stick them onto the large background sheet.

2. Go out to play and then think/talk/remember playtime.

3. Show children the background picture and explain the task.

1. Give each child a piece of paper and pencils and ask them to draw themselves – about eight to eleven centimetres tall works best!

2. When the drawings are finished an adult or the child [depending on age and ability] can cut out the pictures.

3. Each child will then stick their picture onto the playground background.

4. Everyone stands back and says – “We’re in the picture!”
