The social care crisis is threatening the independence of disabled people
'Social care' describes everything from the support a disabled person might need to go to the toilet to a hand with the weekly shop, but a shortage of funding is affecting disabled and elderly people right now. Unless a disabled person's life is judged to be at risk by not receiving social care, it's difficult to receive any support whatsoever.
For Zoe Thomas, who has cerebral palsy, the prospect of losing the level of support she needed left her feeling extremely depressed: "When I was told my care plan was to be cut, I felt suicidal. I loved going out to work and the independence it gave me."
Through our free information and support service, Scope Response, we were able to assist Zoe in getting reassessed. Her Local Authority withdrew their plans to reduce her support package. Scope Response receives 100 calls every day and this essential service relies on public donations to fund its £1 million a year running costs. Your support today helps us cover the cost of potentially life-changing calls.
