Scope's In The Picture project is aimed to promote
the inclusion of disabled children in early years
picture books.

Time To Get Equal initiative, In The Picture is an exciting
and innovative Big Lottery funded project aimed at
promoting equality for disabled children.

The books that we read as children have a profound effect
on our attitudes, values and development. By identifying
with the characters in these books, we learn about ourselves
and how we fit in with the wider world.

The first books for young children are picture books, whose
imagery gives powerful messages to children at this very
early stage. So how must it feel to search in vain for yourself
in pictures? To never see children like you in your local
school or playing in the park with other children? What
message does this give to disabled children and to their non-
disabled peers?

Despite the fact that we are moving towards an inclusive
society, disabled children are still largely invisible in
children's picture books.

The project, now in its third year, has developed resources
and a website packed with information as the team make the
most of the time they have left to inspire and inform people
to include disabled children.
