Curriculum
The school offers a curriculum that is broad and balanced. It is based on and firmly embedded in the theory and practice of Conductive Education and includes a full commitment to pupils’ entitlement to the National Curriculum, which is modified to take account of their individual needs.
The school has excellent resources to support the delivery of the curriculum, which is designed to develop pupils’ independence, communication and mobility across all Key Stages. A network of multi-media computers and associated access devices are in place, as well as appropriate resources to support teaching and learning.
Communication plays a key part in being able to access the curriculum, and the school supports many pupils to learn through Augmented and Assisted Communication (AAC). Some pupils use symbols, which were designed and developed at this school, and are now nationally recognised (Ingfield Dynamic Vocabularies). Technology is also enabling some pupils to use Voice Output Communication Aids.
Assessment is an ongoing process. Each pupil had a detailed Individual Educational Plan showing aims and outcomes of both individual and group work. This is regularly reviewed and revised and summarised for the Annual Review Report. Parents are invited to submit a written report for the Annual Review. At this time a pupil’s Statement of Educational Needs is reviewed, progress is reported on and new aims are agreed.
Pupils’ termly targets are sent to parents with information about class topics and themes. Care plans are written in conjunction with parents and explain in detail the management and holistic needs of each pupil.
