Occupational therapy

Occupational therapists employed by Rutland House School provide assessment, intervention and advice to children and young people who have difficulties with everyday activities.

We work with the students to address their physical, psychological and social needs, in partnership with their families, teaching and care staff, other professionals (such as our physiotherapy and speech and language therapy services) as well as outside agencies.

We offer support with:

  • Access to leisure activities
  • Adaptation – environmental and equipment
  • Developing fine motor skills
  • Eating and drinking
  • Health and safety advice and management of risk
  • Moving and handling
  • Postural management (we advocate a 24-hour postural management programme for all students) to include wheelchair, activity seating and night-time positioning requirements
  • Self-care skills
  • Sensory modulation and integration
  • Specialist equipment – for personal needs such as toileting and bathing
  • Transition services
  • Upper limb orthotics/hand splinting

We can also extend these services into the student’s home environment and beyond, where specialist advice may be required in supporting the student to achieve the same opportunities provided within Rutland House School.
