Speech and language therapy
At Rutland House School, all students’ and pupils’ individual means of communication are recognised and respected in line with the philosophy of conductive education.
We ensure that each student has a personal means of communication that is available, accessible, updated, respected and shared.
We promote a total communication environment whereby all types of communication including alternative and augmentative communication systems (AAC) are valued and used. These include: photos, pictures, symbols, objects of reference, tactile markers, vocalisation/speech, language and high-tech devices, i.e. Voice Output Communication Aids, if appropriate.
We firmly believe that the communication process should be interactive, promoting students to be active communicators.
All students have access to a speech and language therapist, employed by Rutland House School, who continuously develops the environment to enhance communication, as well as supporting individual students and offering regular training to staff.Students’ eating and drinking skills are also monitored by the speech and language therapist, in liaison with other key professionals including the occupational therapist, physiotherapist, teachers and key workers.
