With some nine people arrested over an alleged attempt to defraud the National Lottery and also several children's charities; given its said these arrests were initiated following anomalies in community group grants within the Big Lottery Fund, the Charity Commission spokesperson stated their investigation into the allegations involved hundreds of thousands of pounds and that they had frozen various bank accounts of the suspects Charities for their alleged wrong-doing. It is alleged that other national children's grant making charities including Children in Need, Barnardo's and Comic Relief could have been defrauded.
Respectfully it’s for issues like the above the ‘rule of the day’ for local community and all Charities accounts must provide greater clarity in the detail moreover that accounts are presented in such a way that those who donate know what % in the pound their donation was/is distributed to forward the aims of the Charity furthermore the very people it exists for.
I would hope that Scope could lead the way in bringing about a fundamental change in the way Charities both report and present their accounts and that Charities should provide detail of corporate governance issues and policies and ensure all investments are with ethical enterprises.
Greater transparency can only be helpful in limiting the ability of the scurrilous to defraud grant making organisations and the public who fund them. Charities by doing so will inevitable aid fundraisers as one would be able to answer the publics questions or at least give a point of reference such as the web portal where the public could find the answers.
