I am 54 and have had CP since birth. LIfe has never been easy but, despite my problems, I've always tried to be positive and make the best of what I have. My disability has prevented me from finding worthwhile employment so I do voluntary work. I've lived alone in the community for 27 years and care for myself. I rely wholly on benefits. I'm not well-off compared to my peers and I'm extremely careful with my finances.
i am extremely concerned about the coalition Government's proposals to cut benefits for disabled people as things are already 'difficult'. The government are very keen to exploit the popular belief that those on benefits are 'scroungers' in order to justify the cuts to the wider population.
Disabled people do not have the same access to the media that other groups enjoy - so it's actually very difficult for us to counter this.
I would argue that by living as I do I'm actually saving the government money - since it would cost far more for me to be in residential accommodation.
I believe those in need will suffer disproportionately unless politicians realise that disability is not an optional 'extra' that people choose to have.
I would suggest they try living on the same amount of money that disabled people receive and see how they fare.

Hi Chrisc
Unfortunately the government wouldn't even attempt to live on the benefits we get that would invole them having to think about if they could afford to do something. But don't just let them live on the amount of money we have to live on also make them face the barriers we have to face as wheelchair users etc all the inaccessible shops, and public transport just to mention a few of the issues we face every day.

The governemt are taking the easy way out by targeting the people they feel are less likely to fight back. I think they could be in for a surprise as we start to fight back. Unfortunately all the people out there that are playing the benefit system are making it difficult for the genuine people as all the negative publicity about benefit cheats etc just tars everyone with the same brush.
Which doesn't make life easy for us.

Helen

Alas I have viewed UK politics to be mostly concerned with wining votes, providing a career structure and substantial remunerations for those who have failed to obtain an alternative. As such they view the disabled as a voiceless minority whose votes are unlikely to have any impact at the time of an election. On this basis the disabled are unlikely to receive more than passing consideration and support from any of the political parties: they are viewed as of nuisance value and unlikely to attract politically sensitive attention should their benefits be cut or withdrawn.

i have suffered with severe depression now for 22 years, i have bad panic attacks, anxiety. I dont leave my house unless in a taxi, i always have to have somebody with me when im shopping. I have mood swings, 1 day i can be tearful, other days dont want to do anything, i have days where i feel like my head is rocking, and feel like i could rip someones head off, i shut myself off a lot. When my family are not available to help me, my friend goes to the shop for me. If they stop my d.l.a. i dont now what i am going to do, taxis cost a fortune when you have to rely on them, my family help me to, i am scared to death to even think about going to town to sign on every two weeks, having to many people around me can make me either go into a panic attack or really bad anxiety. I now there is a minority of people out there abusing the benefit system, but why should we suffer, i anything why dont the government go after these deadbeat dads who never pay a penny for their children, they can easily do this by their wages, or if they are on jobseekers, stop their money to help pay for childtax etc, these are the sort of people that need their benefit stopped so they can provide for their children. I am disgustin in the whole system, if ever my mom and dad was still here they both would of been disgusted the way our country as turned out. Id love to see cameron suffer with mental health and live off d.l.a. no way would he beable to manage. The countrys gone to pot, to many people out for their selfs. I have a therapist that comes out to see me, and i now he working with the government to get people like us back to work, do these people really think we enjoy our lifes and are happy, i wish i could lead a normal life, but after 22 years of suffering with mental health, i cannot see me getting any better any time soon, and there are a lot more people out there in the same position i am in.

hi there, i have to say that

hi there,
i have to say that i also am disgusted with this government, i know there are lead swingers amongst the ranks of the DLA system, but they should be weeding them out instead of hounding people who are genuine, for the last 10 years i have received DLA and the Care component, due to having Angina, spinal arthritis, C.O.P.D. high blood pressure, Asthma and one or 2 other small ailments, in the last 10 years i have had 2 medicals and after the first one (which i was sent by the DSS it was for them to say i was capable of going back to work), whilst there the Dr who was supposed to be examining me looked at my sheet and said 'i can't understand just why you are here, you should NOT be here at all) he went in the other room and came back with 2 signiatures to clear me from any sort of medical, some one had slipped up but he asked me to blow into a peak flow meter ( this was AFTER he had told me i would NEVER be sent for again) so i said yes -that was my biggest mistake because i lost it altogether i could not breathe was dizzy and collapsed and ended up going in an ambulance to Hospital where i satyed for a week before they let me home but that was the only time i have ever had a problem with receiving my DLA, that is until last year, ireceived a letter from DLA saying they would like me to have an independant exam from a independant Dr and they would contact me shortly, this letter came to me on the 23rd Dec 2010 and then i got a phone call that same afternoon from this 'independant' asian Dr saying he would be coming to see me on Xmas Eve at around 10 a.m. so i agreed i just want to get it sorted as it ran out on Nov 14th 2010, he came i believe from Bradford he asked me to show him my legs ( i have developed D.V.T. in june of last year so he looked at the size of my ankles, then he asked me to bend forward as far as i could which was far less than 25% and then i was asked to sit down and get back up again to see how i managed, the whole thing lasted less than half an hour, and all the way theough it he was telling my wife that he was ASKING me the questions not her, he was extremely ignorrant i thought, then he went and within 2 weeks i got a letter back saying i had failed to get DLA and Care component this time around because -listen to this ---this is what has got my back up--- he CAN walk over 500 mtres, he is capable of making a meal for himself and altho he needs help to get dressed and showered and he Can manage stairs with no problems,he does not warrant Dla how the **** does He know he didn't give me a proper exam he did NOT ask if it was a good or bad day for me, he didn,t ask anything about the stairs ( we live in a sheltered acomodation flat on the first floor, which does have stairs outside but when you get thru the front door all is on one level) he did NOT ask me how i was at walking or how far i can walk with or without pain, he just seems to have put anything he wished down, and that is certainly the impression i get, anyway the thing is as i say i have not had any problems before in all of the 10 years, but what angers me now is the fact that this year i have had the ambulance called out to me twice for ECG readings and i now find i have Atrial Fibrilation which i am told will be with me all my life and for that i am still taking Warfarin, i also have bad arthritis in my right hip as well as my spine, My Angina has gotten worse so much so that i cannot get dressed on my own due to the pain i get in my chest because of this i cannot bend over far enough to get my clothes on without help,i also need help with showering, and nightime is bad for me because i have great difficulty getting up from my bed so i have to wake my wife up to help me get up just to go to the toilet, and this is at least 3 times every night, my wife is only 5ft 2'' so you can see how hard it is for me to expect her to do these things for me considdering that i am 5.9'' and weigh about 19stone up until last year i weighed out at 21 stone but i now have managed to sort that problem out, but my gripe here s the fact that i have tried to re-apply for my blue badge, and they keep telling me because my application for the DLA has been negative i cannot get one, so thru searching around and talking to 3 people i know who do NOT and never have had DLA and they all have had the blue badges for a minimum of 3 years, i decided to try again and i managed to fill out online a form applying for it again, last week i received a letter from them asking me to deliver to my Dr a letter that was sealed, i managed to see my Dr last thurs and he said he would fill it in for me, for which i am truly grateful, but at the end of the day i am sure i will get another kick in the teeth, and i just cannot understand why seeing as my health is far worse now than it has been in the last 2-3 years and i am now taking tramadol and morphine mst just for the pain i am going thru, i must also add that i do take another 16 tablets a day for other ailments. why am i made to feel like i am taking money from the government under false pretences, the way things are going i am getting very depressed and am feeling so low, i tell you if it wasn't for bad luck i wouldn't have any luck at all, thanks for letting me rave on, i WILL carry on the fight to win back what i considder to be what i am antitled too....i hope to keep you posted.
