Conductive Education
My son spent 3 years in Budapest in the eighties - he is now 22 and I would very much like him to see the documentary 'Standing Up for Joe' so that he can understand and see what motivated us to take him there. I have approached the BBC but they no longer have any copies. Does anywone know where I could get a copy of the film?

My name is Adam Smith, i have a three year old boy (Cameron), who is diagnoised with quadraplegic cerebal palsy and attends Megan Baker House. He is in his secound year now and goes once a week with two block placements a year. These placements run for 4 weeks, five hours per day. They consist of a lying, sitting, standing and manipulation and speech and manipulation programmes, obivously geared towards a more independent life for Cameron. These have become a very big part of Camerons growth and my partner and i have become indebted to "MBH" for the skills that Cameron has learnt in the last year. These include sitting upright on his own, learning to make clear choices between things, weight bearing and most importantly, interaction with other children. These are just a few of the skills that "MBH" can offer children with motor disorders. As any parent you are always sceptical of things un-known to you, no matter how many people praise them but in the case of "MBH" i can honestly say, hand on heart, they have helped no end towards evolving Cameron into the well rounded little man(as i call him) he is today. I would recommend "MBH" to anyone looking to enhance thier childs future.
is that hte High green one too ? we had a 'drive by' the other day and thought it looked a bit rough.
R u in the area too?
We are going for assessment on monday for parent and child conductive education sessions at Paces School in sheffield. I'm really looking forward to it. the only thing i'm worried about is how much time it will involve - i'm theoretically 'back at work' part-time. i wondered what experience people had had with CE and whether it is has helped you?
Hi there,
We took Olivia to Paces for an assessment some weeks ago but have yet to progress it any further - lots of other things going on.
Although it did seem like they were being a bit 'rough' we were impressed with there approach and they were fantastic with Olivia - she seemed to love it.
My only reservation was the building itself which to be honest isn't the nicest of environments.
Let us know what you think.
Glyn.
Went for assessment today and are going to watch a session next week with a view to joining in the week after. I agree with the building it is a bit 'rough', but I was really impressed with Georgie (?) and think it will do both me and Eleanor the world of good. Hopefully see you there some time :)
Hello :)
I'm very glad to read your positive experiences about Conductive Education. I'm a conductor-teacher graduated in Hungary, living and working in the UK in the last two years. I worked in a wonderful team of conductors in Hampshire, but now in a few weeks time I will move to Looe in Cornwall with my boyfriend.
It would be great to find each other with families in the Plymouth area, West Devon or Cornwall. I would be very happy to hear from you.

Hi,
Sorry not been on for a week or so.
Yes, it is the High Green one - we're in Barnsley.
Went to view a session yesterday lunchtime and was quite impressed - strictly speaking not with what they did, because it didn't seem that unusual, but with the views of the other parents in relation to the 'amazing' benefits it seemed to have given their kids.
We've been offered a place on Tuesday lunchtimes between 12 and 2 I think but we're going to hang fire, simply for the reason that I'm moving to a new job in the next couple of weeks (and other things we've got going on at the moment) but I think we'll definitely be taking Olivia at some point.
And yes, Georgia is very nice, the kids seem to love her!
Perhaps may see you there in the future.
Good luck with it.
Glyn.
My daughter, Anya, is affected quite mildly, I think, with right side hemiplegia.
She is just walking and I am wondering whether any of you know if its worth trying conductive education?
Anya's right arm and hand are quite strongly affected. She is not able to use her hand much at all. I don't know much about conductive education and know that they work a lot to get the children walking and moving. So I wondered whether it was worth Anya doing (as she is already able to do most of this).
We have looked into it at a couple of centres and they have said that they are happy to help Anya, but I just wondered what some of you parents might think.
Thanks, Rachel.
Hi
What can I say about conductive education. It's FAB my granson attends two specialist C/E schools, The Rainbow Centre in Fareham and The Dame Vera Lynn School for Parents in Billingshurst and this type of programme is just perfect for him. He has severe CP and he is learning through this special programme to be as independent as possible, whilst working hard and it being fun at the same time.
Thumbs up for Conductive Education
Regards
Debs
I have been taking my daughter to the vera lynn school for parents for 18 months now and I think it is wonderful!
My daughter has achieved so much. You will find all of the staff friendly and welcoming and I cannot praise them enough.
Good luck!
Hi Carol, have you managed to get a copy of the video yet? I would love to see a copy myself so that my partner, Chris, can see what it is I keep going on about. He is brilliant and supporting me all the way with my fight to get more mobile, but it would be good for him to see the TV programme which started all this off for me.
Have you seen the short vids on You Tube? If you go to You Tube and put in Conductive Education there are a lot of small clips on there.
Kind Regards
Karen

Hi Dori - sorry to jump in on this message but I wanted to say Hi and let you know that Heather is doing amazingly well, she is really rising to the challenge and we really appreciate everything you did for her in the CE sessions. Best Wishes for you move, Jenny.
Hi Carol
We are not aware of any way of being able to buy a copy of the film but we do know that library of The Foundation for Conductive Education in, Moseley, Birmingham holds a copy that can be viewed on their premises. Unfortunately, copyright law prevents them from being able to distribute it for viewing elsewhere. The Foundation can be contacted on: 0121 449 1569 or view their website at: http://www.conductive-education.org.uk
Best Wishes

Hello all,
My daughter (aged 15 months today!) has hypotonic cerebral palsy but spasticity in her left hip/leg complicated by joint hypermobility syndrome. I am very excited as have got her an assessment at a Scope school (Ingfield Manor - Dame Vera Lynn) for Condutive Education next week!
I was wondering if anyone has any experience at one of these schools and how is has helped their child and family.
Would love to chat to anyone willing - am waiting to join Special Kids in the UK.
Thanks, Charlotte - Mum to Martha Faith Rose
Hi
We have been taking our grandson to The Rainbow Centre in Portsmouth which is part of the same group I believe. He is nearly 7 now and we have been going since January. He has made amazing progress considering we are only able to go to the fortnightly Saturday morning sessions.
They have told us that he is unlikely to walk unaided but if we had taken him from when he was very young they would probably have got him walking. I don't know if this would have been the case but we are cross that we had to search for this place ourselves and had no help from the NHS or physio.
I have seen children at the centre with a variety of difficulties and there is no doubt that their methods work wonders. Of course, since the NHS just seem to accept the children as they are and put them in a wheelchair or whatever, anything is a bonus as you feel you are doing your best to help them.
Good Luck
Hi Rachel whaere about do you live .My daughter is a a school that teaches conductive education and the difference in her has been unbelievable .
We didn't have a very positive experience with CE but I hear a lot of good things about it from other parent that it makes me wonder whether we were unlucky. I took my son when he was 18 months old and he screamed all the way through the sessions. He was really unhappy and he is usually a happy child. The conductor was very dogmatic and insisted that our children should not have any supportive equipment. My son had just started wearing a lycra suit and she was very disapproving. She also confused a mum whose daughter had started wearing splints prescribed by a physiotherapist at the Bobath Centre by telling her they were the wrong kind. She also said that my son would need an big knee operation in a few years time if he didn't get splints himself, which was very odd given that he has dystonic CP and would not tolerate the splints she was suggesting. Apparently using splints in CE was OK but not other supportive equipment. Perhaps I was unlucky with that particular conductor, but we stopped going as I was left with a very bad impression of CE. I like the idea of it though.
I take my little girl to a parent and child class at a local CE school they help with all aspects of movement including lots of work getting the little ones to use both hands and arms.
eleanor is only 9 months old but the others in her group are all 2+. We have only just started the group, so especially with El being so young it's probably a bit different, but certainly the parents of the older kids seem to find it helpful.
Hi
I would definitely recommend conductive education. My son has been attending a centre now for 18 months and it really works for him. Not only that, it is a really positive place and all the staff are really energetic and you can tell they want your child to achieve.
All the best
Diane
Hi Rachel
Have you looked at Megan Baker House a registered charity that provides Conductive Education services FOC.
They have many diagnosis specific groups, including hemiplegia. www.meganbakerhouse.org.uk
There is an on-line self referral form on the website, currently children attend there from all over the UK.
Good luck, jo-bw
Thanks for bringing this web site to my attention, I hope Carol also finds it interesting. As some of you will have already read elswhere I am looking forward to attending Megan Baker House in Leominster for a week block placement for adults. The more I read about CE the more I am convinced it is going to help me. I hope others reading this site will also take the bull by the horns and give this a go.
Kind Regards
Karen
HI.. I'm just looking into conductive Education and wonder whether anyone has heard of or used the Steps Conductive Eucation Centre in Shepshed. It seems to be the only sentre near us (Nottingham).
Thank you for your suggestion and good luck to Karen in Leominster - I certainly think that Conductive Education helped my son along the way to being independent.
Best wishes,
Carol
Hello
Callum has been attending CE since he was 9 months old (he's almost 3 now) and it has really helped. Word of warning - some of the teaching may clash with physio/OT involvement which leads to confusion. My method is to see which Callum responds to the most for each particular part of the body - taking the best of each if you like.
Hope this helps.
