I totally disagree. I have ataxic CP so have problems controlling my arms. Because of that, I do not have the right and ability to do any job I want. I am a qualified librarian and run a medical library in a hospice. With a volunteer once a week to help with paperwork and binding, I can do that job with my disability.

However, my colleagues are giving injections, other treatment, feeding and washing patients etc. If I attempted such work, I would hurt and endanger the patients. I would not want that and strongly disagree that I should have the right to do so.

In the past, I have had 5 operations performed by a neuro surgeon. If he had a tremor like me, I'd have discharged myself - sharpish!!

Everybody, disabled or not, has limitations, that is how society and the world of work works.

Sarah ;)

hey
thanks sarah
yeah i think that because people have things like Cp it doesnt mean that we have to have a 'suitable' job for however affected we are
I just wish that all the people in the world could see it that way

Hold on a bit - We only have a right to a job if we are able to do that particular task, that's what schooling and training are about.

The problem comes along when we wish to do a job but our disability prevents us; For example I was once qualified as an electronic wireman and applied for a job working on aircraft - The job involved climbing a vertical steel ladder from ground level with a heavy toolbox full of tools - I didn't get the post (This was 1978ish). I later got a job with another company repairing in a workshop - not as exciting! But think for a moment - one could argue that the company that refused employment initially should've bought in equipment to allow me to access the aircraft differently - but at what cost - I could still have fallen elsewhere and so been a danger to both myself and others. They were merely using insight and a view to health and safety - Imagine me falling, putting my arm out and grabbing a loom of freshly wired cable to prevent my fall...

I was just as happy in my other job :o

I am lucky in that today I am training to teach - granted I couldn't cope in a mainstream school - the hours would be far too long! But that doesn't mean I can't do shorter sessions at my local Learning Centre. Should I be able to work in the local school then I would expect them to make any required changes to allow me to do so - within their capability

So no I don't think we are entitled to any job we want - You wouldn't want me on your football team no matter how much support I was given :) :) :)

all i can say from my point of view is that any one can do exactly what they want, i am 47 and just about done everything I wanted to do I dont allow my cp to get in the way, if you want to do it badly enough there are always ways to achieve you goal, if they are able to do what that job entails, I have done many jobs but on my own as self enployed, the reality is as you age you change and some of the jobs I am not fit enough to do thoghs jobs, any longer.

but employers have to in todays society have to treat every one as equal, but they dont really, I have proved that if an employer does not know your disabled and you are capable of doing the job why should they be given the opertunity to discriminate against you, I found if you can get away with it, and get your foot in the door and do the, and then see who you really are then they learn you have sisabilities, at that point if your lucky, they have opertunity to know who you are and are generally more keen to help you.

thats been my experience, and infact i have just started a new job largly on the basis that person who gave me the job knows who I am and my capabilities.

in a nut shell if you want to do that job you will find away to do it.

I'd have to disagree with that - I have had to moderate what professions I considered joining as I would not have been considered 'fit to practice'.

Hi I have Cp which is mild but has effected my legs and back greatly over the last six years and I had two major operations last year and this year . I was a Nursery Nurse for 12 years and I had to give it up as it was too physical for me in the end when my health got worse . My employers tried to get rid of me but I proved to them i can do some work and have retrained myself as a Admin Assistant. With help from Scope .
I belive if you want to work then you can with the right help.
Iam a long way off a full recovery and will have to cope with Cp like us all for the rest of my life but i will not let it stop me . Carrie

Hopefully, people will start to reply soon to a new posting (key forums>work) "WHAT JOB DO YOU DO?" so you'll see what varied jobs those of us who have CP do.

Cheers
