Hi I am going through a real hard time right now. I have cp mildley though it is affecting my health greatly now. I have one leg shorter han the other. Which after years of limping has fractured my back and turned my leg inwards . I have worked as a nursery nurse 11 year` it too six year`s of working in the private secter to get my dream job of working in a council nursery in a deprived area and really make a difference to them kids.
Any way my helth got worst and i neeed three operations two on longer leg to rotate and shoten it which i had in april 07. Still learning walk . I am in a temp post at the moment can only stay till march 08. The problem is the council want to redeploy me in jan/march. Iam having my last operation in march just as small one on my back. The redeployment is 12 weeks to find a job then sacked if not . my problem is i will be in hospital how can i look for a job as well . I have been told by doctors i will recover to do my old job but council will not wait .
I am stressed to bits and feel i am eing unfairly treated.
I have been through a lot still not walking without sticks and in pain. All i want is to be aloud to recover. carrie

Hi carrie29

I am sorry to hear that you have an infection. I wish you well.

In relation to work, you state that nothing has happened yet, does this mean your employers are giving you time to recover? or is it the case that because you need time to recover your employers are not helping you to find a new job, whose responsibility is it to find a new job, yours in the sense that you have to look for suitable jobs to apply for your self or are your employers supposed to help you with this?

Hi Carrie29,

I feel that I have taken discussions about my job as far as I can, I am contracted until 31st December so I'll get my december pay and and compensation payment in January 2008. I found the redeployment team and senior management could not assure us that they could find people jobs, in fact they let some of my colleages down as they had given them the impression that jobs would be available in other departments, but when the time came these positions were not available.

I do have issues relating to redeployment and i know that it is harder for my employers to redeploy me due to my health and disability issues, but I felt I could not give them the option of posting me in Stratford, or Balham or anywhere ele so i decided to leave. The other thing is we were told that if we hadn't taken the package or scured a new job by March 2008, they would get people jobs that are termed as compulsory postings that would offer limited choice

Can i ask which council do you work for?, Have you asked whether your employer could hold your job open until after your operation and required recovery period?

If i am honest I am worried about the future as i have been working full time since 2000 but on the other hand i have been left with little choice, and needed to make a decision either way.

Hi Carrie29

I understand where you and panther are coming from. According to DDA leglislation your situation, that you need employers to understand that you need ample time for recovery after your operation comes under DDA reasonble adjustments. check out this link http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/foradvisers/usingyourrights/Pages/...

below is the part of the legislation that I think could help you.

Examples of reasonable adjustments
Reasonable adjustments that an employer should consider making include:

allowing the person to be absent during working or training hours for rehabilitation, assessment or treatment
modifying or adjusting disciplinary and grievance procedures
adjusting redundancy selection criteria
You can find out more about reasonable adjustments and how to ask for them in Where can I get help?

Law Centres
Law centres were set up to provide free and independent legal services in their local area. You can find out if there is a law centre in the area where you live or work on (telephone) 020 7387 8570 or at www.lawcentres.org.uk.

Another option might be contact the trade union?

sorry it's a bit long but it may help.

Hi Carrie29

I understand your situation as i have recently left my job after 7 years due to redeployment. I would suggest you find whether you will definitely be redeployed in March as the employer i have just left has stated the same thing, but I was told before i decided to leave it could take longer than March to find everyone new jobs. My employer also stated that they would help us secure new jobs but all they do is ask whether we have applied for any jobs, and whether we have been successful in gaining an interview. We were told it is down to our employer to find us a new job, as they are having to go through a redeployment downsizing exercise as a government organistion.

The company you are temping with may have a different policy? It may be worth checking out the disability rights website in regards to your rights and your employment contract.

Hi Carrie

Even if your cp is only mild if it is causing this many health problems at the moment maybe your current job is no longer suitable and you would be better off looking for something more suitable.

From what I've read of your posts I'm sure you were kept on your feet a lot looking after th children. There are many of us on here that have had to rethink our employment or our employment options as we have expierenced more problems with our cp. I am one of them and my cp would also be classed as mild. But I still had to make the difficult decision once to change job as the job I was doing was contributing to other problems with the cp like fatigue and pain etc and then again 5 or so years later I choose to leave work altogether.

Maybe you need to stop fighting for this job concentrate on your recovery from surgery and then look for something more suitable when you are better.
Probably not what you want to hear but I've learnt over the years cp eventually makes you face up to the things you don't want to or don't like.

Good luck with whatever you decide

Day time tv or any tv is a bore after a while. Can you work towards your course at home? Do you have an interest you can get stuck into? I am interested in family history for example but i think that may be a oldie hobby! judging by forums . (I have always been interested in history though.) I have always worked hard with preparation for teaching etc it occupies my mind and when I am not working I need to keep busy. If you are feeling low talk to you doctor about your mood as well as the CP. Sorry to hear about OH'mum.

Hi Carrie29

I hope your doing ok?

The question you posted about whether any one with mild cp has had to change career, is interesting

I see the position as a chance to gain new skills etc, but it also gives you the opportunity to add something new to your CV, while allowing you to think hard about what you want to, opening a new chapter in your life.

Take Care

Thanks Carrie, i have very mild CP and am about to lose my teaching job. The head doesn't believe my CP is part of my problem because i said it didn't really effect me at interview 3 years ago. But I am 51 and am slowing down just been to casualty cause I stumbled -my left hand was badly swollen -I have right hemiplegia fortunately hand not broken. I will keep your determination in mind as i "fight" this week.

Hi Carrie29

The organisation that you are doing your course with is it learn direct or another organisation? are you doing the ECDL yourself or is it part of your re deployment package?

What ever the setup of how the course is administered your hard work will be worth it, when you gain the ECDL qualification in Information Technology Competence. Keep smiling and think of what you will have achieved when you finished the course.

Hi Paula

Have you seen the cp and ageing factsheet produced by Scope? You can download it from the information section of this forum it might be worth a read and possibly showing to your headteacher. I have used it many times when I have wanted to prove that problems with my cp are increasing although I've only got mild cp that affects both my legs.

Try also contacting the job centre and asking about access to work again have the factsheet at the ready to back you up a bit. But access to work can often be helpful at one point through them I had a support worker employed to help me do my job at the local library.

Good luck

Hi Carrie 29

I wonder if you have thought about seeing if the disability rights commission would consider support your case? I am shocked to hear that your employers would not let scope in the building, I take it they were made aware that scope was representing you?

It sounds to me like you are stuck in a very difficult situation, I hope you legal advice case is considered soon.
