Hi, my 7yrs has diplegic cerebral palsy, and we are finding that he is having more and more no.2 accidents in his pants. He swears that he has no warnings that he needs the loo, as at first we thought he was just being lazy because its such an effort for him to go to the loo beause of his disablity but now im not so sure. He goes to main stream school and has no accidents there, only seems to be at home or at his nans, which makes me feel awful. He is a very inteligent boy who is at the top of his class and is well beyond his years. He gets very upset when it happens as he just cant understand why he doesnt know its comming.
Is this something to worry about or does this just come with the CP.
Thanks xx

Hi. We went through a very similar period with our daughter (age 6) who was fine during the weekend (even very busy ones) but would almost always have an accident during the lunch break at school (main stream). We never found the root cause, but my wife and I worked hard with the school looking at the environment, the people etc. but we couldn't find any real reason. It has however started to address it self although we do have the occasional issue. I do believe that with certain cases of CP there is less warning, but that is only my opinion. Thanks.

Hi,
My daughter is 6 utterly gorgeous just likeh your son extremely academic, she too has cp and is at the top of her mainstream class. She was in nappies until she was 4 as she seemed to have no idea when she needed to go to the toilet. She was diagnosed at 3 with chronic constipation and prescribed movicol. With the correct balance of meds (to keep stools very soft) she has learned to co ordinate the muscles to open her bowels daily before bed - she never feels the urge to go but can now make it happen, we keep the balance of meds correct so that she can "go" . We have discussed this at length with her peads who believe that she doesn't feel the sensation so it seems that cp can cause toileting issues , however as long as she "goes" every evening she doesnt have accidents during the day.
I really do feel for you and your little man it's so frustrating for you both x hope you r able to find a solution for him soon x x
Best wishes joe

It is such a relief to hear these comments. I have an 8year old daughter who is still having problems with going to the toilet for a poo. She too is on movicol, but we cannot get the dose right! She was under the care of the hospital because of this problem but we got discharged earlier this year, however the problem has come back. I am off to doctors on thursday to see if we can get refered back. It is so frustrating as we don't know if it s due to her cp or she just can't be bothered because sometimes she gives us the impression that it is laziness and that she isn't bothered. Any tips on how to get movicol balance right and how to train a head strong 8 year old to go to the toilet would be much appreciated.
