Car seats
Hi
I think your best bet is to go to your nearest Mothercare World or similar and let them fit a seat for you and see what fits both the car and your child best!
The Britax special needs range are very good - i would let you have ours but it has gone mouldy in the garage so no good - we were given it by a neighbour whose daughter had CP.
lots of advice been given so hope some of it helps!
We had to same problem my daughter was to big for a rear facing car seat i didn't get on with she britax special needs car seat so i bought a britax first class si, As my daughters hed contoll is no good at all. this car seat can be rearward or farward facing, it reclinds right back so she is not needing to controll her head. and it is nice and coushioned with high sides. Although it is big and heavy i've found it amazing. Although i do use a rounded head cushion. Hope this helps.
Hi,
I've been looking into next size seats for my ds George who is 7 months with CP. Have a look at the concord ultimax, I believe it can be rear facing up to 13kg which gives a bit more range than the others and then can be front facing.

Hi there
My 8 month old daughter has poor head control and she has the concorde ultimax. Myself and her OT went looking for one and that seems to be the best on the market for car seats that arent specifically special needs.
It has places for extra padding so you could always pad it up a little for more support. My daughter loves it!!!!
Hi,
My 11month old son has a little head control but not enough for a forward facing seat.
The OT has got us a BRITAX seat the two way Elite, apparently it's not the standard UK version but was easy enough to get. It can go either front or rear facing and you can buy additional head support.
If you want I can find out where it was bought from but I guess as this thread has been going for some time you may have bought one already.

Hi, we have just got a car seat for my son its from a company called JCM and it is brill. Have a look on there web site www.jcmseating.co.uk. It did cost alot of money but worth it £633. Its a recaro car seat it comes with a turntable, flexi support, neck roll ( to support the neck ) and a waist coat to hold him in the correct position.
I hope this will help take care :)

Thanks for the advice everyone. We have ended up with a Britax First Class Si, which is fairly bog standard seat but can rear face to up to 13kgs so should be ok for quite a while. In it we are using a head support made a company called Eddie Bauer in the States. My friend who also has a child with CP found them over there and they are brilliant, you can put them in the buggy, car seat, supportive seat etc and they really help to keep heads well supported and midline. Not sure if you can get them over here but worth a search.
thanks again
Katie
Hiya
Can anyone tell me where I can get a decent car seat for Jacob. His physio etc keep going on about correct positioning, but when I asked about a car seat they said they can put me in touch with someone but will have to pay for it myself, which is fine, but its been 2 months since I asked and keep asking but get no where. Can anyone suggest anything?
Hi Andrea
Chloe has the Concorde Ulitimax and she loves it. It is quite big and can be adjusted many ways to get the best for the child out of it.
I find waiting for equipment etc. to be very frustrating so i went out with Chloe's OT and she agreed that this one was the best for her as she doesnt have much trunk or head control.
Hi Andrea,
I would definatley agree with Lisa..... the concorde ultimax is really excellent.
It can rearward face up to a certain weight too which is great.
Can also get the fitting really secure.
Its so good for my little girl who also has weak head and particularly trunk control.
Good luck and hope you get it sorted out soon....

Andrea we had an otto bock swivel seat
(in fact it's for sale!) before the adapted car and it was very good indeed.
Hi Andrea,
I have a JMC High support car seat for my son which is great as it swivels so it makes it easy to put Joe in and out. with less strain on my back, as he is now 6 years old. I got it through my OT, she also funded it, so kick up a stink, as once you start paying they will always expect you to.
Good luck

Hello Tedwin,
We just bought a Britax First Class, and I am very curious about the Eddie Bauer head supports you mentioned in your last post to this thread. Do you happen to know what they are called?
They sound very useful.
:)

hi,it is my first time on the forum,my daughter is 14months old,she was deprived of oxygen at birth, resulting in moderate brain damage...we were told that she maybe severely mentally and physically disabled, but would have to wait and see!she was fed via an ng tube, but has since had a nissans op and gastostomy tube due to severe reflux.she has poor head control, and therefore is unable to sit unaided...i have asked the phsio if she will be diagnosed with cp,and she has said yes.amelia is bright, happy and responsive, which we are so thankful for,but does have regular episodes of discomfort, still we think related to her reflux, she gets alot of wind, which has to be released via the g.tube, and often she appears uncomfortable in her car seat and buggy....crying and extending.we are just trying to find out about car seats....she is only just heavy enough now to go to forward facing.there doesnt seem to be much info, the o.t.'s and phsio arent allowed to recommend any!!we have seen the bebe comfort isis oxygen, which has good head support,8 recline positions and swivels around to put your child in...it looks good, and has good reviews from parents of non disabled kids...but it isnt actually a special needs car seat...has anyone else used this seat,or can anyone recommend any others?we are on the waiting list now for a special needs buggy from the nhs, that will be better,as her buggy really doesnt give her much support.the last year has been such a nightmare, the reflux was so bad it took over our lives for 9months,and now that is sorted out we are coming to terms with everything else.i am only just able to get time now to start researching stuff and this is my first ever forum!!i have just sent for info on the brainwave centre...has anyone else looked into that?
When my son ben was little we just had a standard britax renaissance carseat recommended by our OT which we used till he was 4. I would try a variety of seats in mothercare or somewhere and see which one she sits in best. They'll all have a 5 point harness which is great for support and as you said reclining is essential but I wouldn't think the swivelling is that important unless she's heavy/awkward to lift.
I'd also recommend joining http://www.specialkidsintheuk.org/phpBB2/ if you want another forum as there are lots of parents with good ideas there too.

hi my daughter has just been diagionsed with cp so also new to site, where i live ot's are allowed to recommed seats and have recomened the bebe isoli (bad spelling) it is £199 but is one up from the isis, they also fund some of the cost but not sure how much yet. you really need to find one that suits your daughter and fits in your car(only a few will fit mine) good luck
Hi I am quite new to this forum but have posted questions and always got lots of help, you may also want to try special kids in the uk website if you haven't already. Our son 11 months has moderate to severe CP poor weight gain due to feeding problems. Anyway quite new to all this myself but we have been given a bingo hoggi buggy, which offers more support as he wears a waist coat type thing the seat can recline and be more upright, we are really pleased with it and it has a dynamic seat which phsyio and ot seem to like because of his extensions. (a spring in the back if the seat) He is still quite small and cannot reach anything to push against just yet. Not much help on the car seat as Thomas seems ok although his head sometimes slumps forward we sometimes use a neck pillow. He is still facing the rear not big enough yet! Take care from caroline
have you tried looking at otto bock they make a car seat for disabled children
http://www.ottobock.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/ob_uk_en/hs.xsl/3491.html
you can try and apply for funding from cerebra
or family fund
http://www.familyfund.org.uk/newsite/content.asp?section=00010002
hope this is helpfull

Hiya Tedwin
I spoke to my OT today, she said there is a car seat on the market which is fantastic which isnt special needs, she is going to find out who makes it, she isnt sure if you can get them at Mothercare, and let me know. When she does, I shall let you know.
