splints
hello, my five year old has very mild cp - focused on tightness in legs - tip toeing.....
We have got splints for him today - day and night time. However none of his shoes now fir. He is a size 11 - 12. I have tried a 1 and 2 on him today wearing the splints but still none fit. Could anybody please recommend to me what i should do. Many thanks - ( first time i have ever used a forum!!))

Hi Cheds
Welcome to the forum !
Our son also has mildish CP and sounds v similar to yours. He is 3.5
A few random thoughts ...
* We've just been through the same thing and after buying 4 pairs of shoes in increasing sizes we eventually found a pair of 'Thomas Tank Engine' white trainers that we could stretch enough to get over the AFO's (splints) - I'll check with the wife where she bought them - Its not a great solution but the best we found
* I think trainers are generally better than shoes
* Try not to spend too much - they will get wrecked by the splints !
* Sketchers have been recommended
* Your hospital/doc should be able to prescribe something suitable. Our boy is getting some via this route. You may need to kick up a fuss though
* Have a look at Hatchbacks - bit pricey though
* Clarks do different width fittings - these may be worth a go ?

ps For our son the splints have made a massive differerence - in only a few months - good luck with them
Hi, I've just got a splint for my 6 year old son aged 6 who has got mild cp. I've managed to get a pair of school shoes and trainers for him. The shoes are clarks "Jack Nano" and they are in a 'H' width fitting and were £35. The trainers are Geox "J VITA J- textile + suede". These are very expensive at £48 but are really cool and trendy and he loves them. Geox also do a cheaper white trainer that works well with splints. Hope this helps. Believe me, I've been in all the shoe and sports shops trying not to cry so I know what you are going through!

Piedro do special orthotic shoes that fit over AFOS. Our are funded through the physio department as are very expensive. They have a website. The shoes are def v. cute and cool!
First time Ive used the forum too. I would give the Orthotist a ring who made the splints and ask their advice. This must be a common problem. They may be able to trim the surplus material at the front to ensure they are not bigger than necesary. See what advice they can offer.
Hope you get sorted.
Kind Regards
