Scope’s Face 2 Face service is set to offer improved support to more families, following a three year partnership with the Pears Foundation. This investment will enable us to look at the best ways to support families of a disabled child, regardless of disability or diagnosis and put into place better systems to make sure that families are getting the support that they need.
Face 2 Face shows how families can be supported through one of the most difficult times that they can experience. It’s a unique way of connecting parents to provide emotional and practical support and parents tell us that it makes a huge difference to talk to a volunteer who’s been through some of the same difficult experiences as them.
People’s Health Trust supports 23 local projects working with families of disabled children across England and Wales. Face 2 Face in Brighton and Hove, for example, was set up thanks to money raised by the society lottery HealthWish through The Health Lottery.
We used the funding to train 12 volunteer befrienders, all of whom have a disabled child themselves, to emotionally support other parents of disabled children. The befrienders also draw from their own personal experiences of being a parent of a disabled child to tell parents about other local services and support that's available.
With the successful funding partnership now exceeding £1 million, we’re working with more families of disabled children locally, providing essential emotional support to parents in need.
