Sleep

About one in four children will have problems sleeping. Lack of sleep can affect learning, mood, behaviour, health – as well as the whole family!

Disabled children often have problems getting to sleep, waking up during the night or too early in the morning. According to a Contact a Family survey, over 70% of disabled children have sleep problems. There is, however, still very little support for families or practitioners when it comes to sleep difficulties.

Sleep Solutions supports both families and practitioners to help to resolve sleep difficulties by offering:

  • individual family work
  • sleep awareness workshops for parents and practitioners
  • simple sleep ideas to try at home

Our aim is, through working with parents, practitioners, Primary Care Trusts and local authorities, to provide secure, effective sleep services in England.

Sleep Solutions workshops

Using Aiming High and the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services as a framework, we offer sleep workshops that:

  • increase early intervention
  • raise awareness for both parents and other practitioners leading to the prevention of sleep difficulties
  • support families to cope with sleep difficulties in a more positive way

Individual family work

We work free of charge with families of disabled children who have sleep problems, are in crisis or whose situation makes group work difficult.

Each family is unique, so we try to be as flexible and responsive to their needs as we can.

The one-to-one work produces an individual sleep programme, worked out in partnership with the family and any respite carers. The sleep practitioners then work with and support the family through the implementation of the sleep programme to adapt their child's night time behaviour.

Referrals are subject to the availability of a sleep practitioner and their current waiting list. Please be aware that this service may be refused if Sleep Solutions consider the programme inappropriate for any child or family.
