Acupuncture
Probably the most well-known of the traditional Chinese medicines, acupuncture works on the basis that there are channels of energy running throughout the body. These channels are called meridians and the belief is that the flow of energy (chi) can become blocked causing problems or illness.
Extremely fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points to free the energy channels and balance the body to stimulate healing. Check beforehand that the therapist uses new needles for every client; if not, you should look for another therapist. It is commonly assumed that acupuncture hurts but most people report little or no discomfort.
Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of acupuncture, and it is often incorporated with traditional medicines and treatments. Some people have found it improves muscle tone or aids pain relief.
