Cause and effect toys
Pushing buttons, stepping on a dance mat or using a remote control all help children understand that they can have an impact on the world. Once they learn they can create sound or light, children will repeat the action and this repetition is an important aspect of early play.
You can tell that children understand cause and effect when you see them exploring switches, buttons and touch screens and investigating what happens next.
Useful toys
- Dance mats, sound beams and sound boards can be used by children who can stimulate response with movement.
- Push button toys require fine motor control so the size and shape of the buttons is important.
- Many children now use tablets, computer touch screens and concept keyboards. The size and shape of the mouse, icon or touch pad can be tailored to need.
- Water and sand play encourages children to fill and empty containers and build and knock down sand castles. Encourage them by playing alongside them commenting on their looking, listening and anticipation skills.
Recording
Record the child’s play and exploration in photographs and observations in the learning journal or play diary to build up a picture of their favourite cause and effect toys and activities.
