  • Physical processes

In Science at KS1, pupils work in the following areas of knowledge, skills and understanding:

Scientific enquiry

  • Ideas and evidence in science
  • Investigative skills

Life processes and living things

  • Life processes
  • Humans and other animals
  • Green plants
  • Variation and classification
  • Living things in their environment

Materials and their properties

  • Grouping materials
  • Changing materials

Physical processes

  • Electricity
  • Forces and motion
  • Light and sound

During KS1 pupils observe, explore and ask questions about living things, materials and phenomena. They begin to work together to collect evidence to help them answer questions and link this to simple scientific ideas. They evaluate evidence and consider whether tests or comparisons are fair. They use reference materials to find out more about scientific ideas. They share their ideas and communicate them using scientific language, drawings, charts and tables.

These pages show the challenges that disabled children may face in science and what you can do to lessen the impact. Read all sections in conjunction with the general advice that applies across subjects and the ideas on P levels 4-8 for science.
