Mathematics and autism spectrum disorder at P level 5

Autism spectrum disorders

These sections refer to high-functioning autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Begin by reading about the main challenges for children with autism and Asperger’s syndrome across subject areas.

P Level 5 requires greater skills in discerning the features of objects. The child will need help to focus on the features that are being compared. There is also an increase in vocabulary, learned through songs and rhymes, which the child may not like because they are noisy

You can:

  • Extend the child’s repertoire of songs and rhymes, but to help them feel secure recap better known ones too. If noise is an issue help desensitise the child with short and supported exposure to singing and rhymes.
  • Make sure new vocabulary is used in context and that both the general and specific meanings are clearly explained. The child with Asperger’s syndrome will get very confused when they find that something is not always so. Try using various specific examples.
  • Continue to use things of particular interest to the child to motivate them.
  • Help the child to see the whole picture because otherwise they will focus on details.  When comparing attributes, the child may get side-tracked into certain aspects and then get confused.
  • Allow brain-breaks to prevent overload.
