Mathematics and dyslexia at P level 8

The vocabulary used to explain mathematical concepts plays a larger role at P level 8. When assessing the understanding of concepts be careful that issues with retaining vocabulary do not limit the child’s achievements.
You can
- Remind the child of the meanings of key words before expecting them to describe shapes.
- Ask questions. If the child’s answer does not seem to tie in with their practical work – try to correct any terminological misunderstandings.
- Find memorable ways of writing numbers (for example five could be seen as ‘a long neck, a big round tummy and a hat on’). Be consistent inhow you describe the shape while the child draws it, and it will become automatic. (Allow the child to describe shapes in their own words, provided it shows an understanding (bendy could substitute for curved, in for example).
