Mathematics and physical impairment at P level 6
This level focuses on understanding one-to-one correspondence (the ability to match one object to one (corresponding) number or object), object permanence (the understanding that objects exist even if they cannot be seen, heard or touched) and the ability to compare and contrast features of objects - all difficult without the ability to feel and search for objects.
You can:
- Help the pupil to understand object permanence by guessing the location of something. If they can’t describe where to look, use a game of hot and cold or yes and no. Use careful questions, visual prompts and computer programs with switch access to assess understanding.
- Help the pupil to develop one-to-one correspondence through matching games, for example setting the table for three teddies or dolls for a ‘picnic’ and matching the spoons to the teddies, one for each. Share biscuits or cakes, count them and share them out with two other pupils, supporting the pupil as necessary through physical involvement or by careful questioning as to what to do next.
- Try sorting counters into colours in groups of three, or matching types of animals in groups of three, supporting the pupils as necessary, as above through physical involvement or by careful questioning as to what to do next.
