Mathematics and visual impairment at P level 8
At P level 8 there is a focus on estimating, which often depends on assessing visually. This, and the concept of time, will be a challenge
You can:
- Get the child to place different-sized versions of the same object in order. Use objects of different sizes in direct proportion to each other, for example sorting bears. The idea that the large bear is as big as two small bears can help the child see that one object can be a number of times bigger than another. This is a necessary stage in estimating
- Help the child understand the days of the week by using a tactile object to represent each day. Sunday could have a sun symbol or each object could link with what happens at school that day. In discussion with the child, agree what object they would like to use
- Describing shapes will depend on adequate vocabulary which is challenging for a child who cannot see. Allow a lot of time - it takes much longer when things have to be felt, or peered at closely through a lens
