Science and dyslexia at P level 8

Drawing of brain with letters inside

The dyslexic child may have problems with the terminology associated with change, such as life cycles (chrysalis to butterfly).  They may struggle with recording evaluation, because of sequencing and vocabulary issues. Sorting materials should not pose problems as a concept, but talking about it and using terminology may do so.

Also read the information on the challenges faced by children with dyslexia across the curriculum and at all levels, plus the suggestions for inclusion.

You can:

  • Pre-empt new vocabulary, recapping on key words and supporting the pupil to make comparisons with targeted questions (as with previous P levels).
  • Give real experiences of change; visit wildlife centres and zoos, keep caterpillars or other insects and watch DVDs about change processes.
  • Help the pupil communicate observations, verbally and by using a voice-recorder, digital camera or illustrated work sheet with prompts.
