Mathematics at KS2 and physical impairment

The National Curriculum for mathematics is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers years 3-6 (children aged from 8-11 years).

The challenges at this level are similar to KS1.

You can:

  • Use technology such as relevant software programs which have voice input and turn voice input to text. There are a number of these on the market and also programs that use eye-gaze to type text
  • A basic digital voice recorder can be used as an immediate way of recording results, and then saved in a folder on the computer, which may be a quicker option than voice recognition software
  • Look at a large key-pad calculator – as above these are available through specialist suppliers
  • Try to ensure that assessments are not restricting achievement for a physically disabled pupil through their physical requirements: allow support for any physical requirements that do not demonstrate understanding in themselves (such as ruling a line)
  • Look at multiple-choice assessment that can be computerised and the answer is simply the addition of a letter or number relating to their chosen answer.
