Mathematics at KS3 and physical impairment

The National Curriculum for mathematics is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 3 covers years 7-9 (children aged from 12-14 years).

The challenges at KS3 are similar to those of KS1 and 2 - of accessing resources, collaborative working and recording work.

Use of assistive technology is essential to enable pupils with severe physical impairment to access and record their work. For less severe physical impairment, ensure that the pupil has the space and equipment they need, and is able to take a time-out rest when physically tired. Buddying can work very well, if sensitively done and well supported.
