Sensory impairments

Children with sensory impairments can attend any educational setting as long as it is made accessible. They many need support from trained staff, specialist resources and communication aids, so it’s important that the teacher understands the individual needs of the child.

Many early years settings and schools have their own sensory rooms to support learning with light, sound, smells and texture. The benefits of this approach to all children in early years are well documented and it is now being used across age ranges.

Teachers may benefit from visiting specialist provision to get ideas for creating a multi-sensory learning environment and find out about the equipment available.
