Play activity 3 - who am I?
This activity develops body awareness, independent movement, looking and tracking, exploration and investigation, communication skills.

Activities
- Smile at the child; encourage them to explore your face while you’re smiling. Talk to them using exaggerated mouth movements (try not to use facial movements that may scare the child)
- Place the items on your face or head and encourage the child to look. Move your head from side to side, bring it closer to the child’s face and move it away
- Offer the items for the child to explore
- Place the child in front of a mirror and talk to them about the items before placing them on their head and face
- Use the items to play peek-a-boo games
- Vary your approaches if the child loses interest
Moving on
- Use different materials to play peek-a-boo or hiding games
- Dress up in cloaks and different forms of clothing
- Give the child choices of hats, scarves and sunglasses
- Make sparkly sunglasses with card, paint and glitter
- Add bells or rattle sounds to hats.
Observation and assessment
- Use the props on yourself – watch for the child’s responses
- Encourage the child to try on the props – supply a mirror – note responses
- Encourage the child to explore the different texture and note likes or dislikes
- Take photographs to make a book or flash cards for discussion
- Ask family members to try on the items too, and take photographs
- Determine textures that the child like or dislikes – introduce different textures
Inclusion guide
- Involve the whole group and get them to try on different hats, scarves and so on – watch in the mirror
- In pairs, see if they can paint each other dressed up in the fun accessories
- Make a lotto game in which they have to dress up to match their card
