Art and design and autism spectrum disorder at P level 7

At P Level 7 the concept of communication through creativity is introduced. It is hard for a child with autism spectrum disorder to use a creative art form to represent ideas, without structured support. Translating creative visual communication will be very challenging.
You can:
- Carefully structure the teaching of communicating ideas or events through colour, form, line and tone. Look at one aspect at a time and link this to specific events, such as flames for bonfire night. Ask ‘what colours do we need?’, ‘how does changing the colours change what the picture is showing us?’
- Use input from other senses related to the subject, including music. For a sea theme use Debussy’s La Mer or Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. Bring in the smell of sea-shells and the feel of sand and pebbles.
