Art and design and autism spectrum disorder at P level 6

Autism spectrum disorders

P Level 6 requires more independent use of equipment and links the action of creating with the intention to create and produce work. This involves decision-making, cause and effect awareness and an understanding of an end product. Autistic pupils find it hard to redirect their thoughts and intentions from a course of action they have decided on, so the issue of practising new skills could be a problem.

You can:

  • Approach the task logically so the pupil can understand how to apply skills better.
  • Encourage them to want to be creative by looking at what they and others have made. If the object has a functional use (such as a decorated photo-frame or beaded necklace) they will find it easier to understand the concept of an end product.
  • Try to use cross-curricular connections to reinforce purpose, such as making a ramp to test cars on.
