Art and communication difficulties at P level 4

Communication

Read the section on communication difficulties that applies across subject areas and levels for an explanation of the main issues and strategies to use in each case.

For art and design at P level 4, try to make the process as important as the outcome so that there is a feeling of achieving and developing confidence through a practical task that’s not restricted by abstract concepts.

You can:

  • Try using materials which have texture, and if possible some sound effect, such as the material in survival blankets which is shiny and rattles when scrunched up. Fill an area of the paper or card (perhaps an outline of an animal such as a fish) with glued-on materials in different textures, in whatever way the pupil chooses, but so that there is a clear outcome.
  • Try a similar activity with printing using a variety of objects (for example a piece of sponge, string of manageable length, cut vegetables or fruits, 2-D shapes, fingers, hands). The pupil can see an end product, and this can be developed into a more of a choice through offering alternatives such as colour, materials, background card.
