Art and communication difficulties at P level 6

The additional requirements at P level 6 are for pupils with communication difficulties to show an intention to create, to imitate the use of tools in using them effectively and purposefully, and to gather suitable resources.
You can:
- Make the activities as practical as possible, reinforcing vocabulary in a supportive way, rather than as a barrier, to the activity.
- Try using a series of images, like an illustrated recipe, to show what they are working towards.
- When this concept has been established encourage the pupil to include their own ideas, approaching this through a series of planned questions, for example: ‘I’ve painted my tile blue. What colour would you like to choose?' (Offer a choice through visual prompts) or ‘I’ve made my tile a square, like our tile around the sink, over there (show the pupil). There are other shapes we can choose' (show pupil using visual prompts).
- Keep language simple and consistent.
- Use lots of encouragement for what the pupil has done and about what they can do next, offering choices.
