Art and communication difficulties at P level 7

The challenge at this level is for the child to communicate their intention and to make choices.
You can:
- Support the pupil to understand the concepts of communication through creativity, with concrete examples, and to develop the necessary vocabulary.
- Use obvious artwork with a simple message as a resource and share what the picture is saying, for example a smiling face.
- Move on to more abstract concepts and symbolism such as still water versus a stormy sea.
- Approach the different aspects of colour, form, line and tone separately, to avoid confusion.
- Use abstract examples to show that art does not have to replicate people, objects or animals.
- Try linking music and art as another way of communicating (see P Level 5 for some ideas).
