Art and design and hearing impairment at P levels 4–8

The impact of hearing impairment on learning is similar throughout the P levels.
The visual, tactile and creative elements of this subject mean art and design should not be a problem for the hearing impaired pupil, provided they have developed the relevant concepts and vocabulary.
Read the main issues and suggestions for hearing impaired children across subject areas. In addition:
- At P level 5 the challenge is gaining a familiarity with techniques.
- At P level 6 it is working with the intention to create.
- P level 7 concerns communicating ideas or events through art, and developing confidence.
- P level 8 requires the pupil to understand when a work is finished and that paintings, sculptures and drawings have meaning.
- If an auditory stimulus is being used, make sure the pupil has heard correctly and is able to put instructions into context.
- Make sure instructions and vocabulary are clear and support is as visual as possible, with concrete examples.
- Support the concept of creating a piece of art as a means of communicating; a sort of sign language, perhaps.
