Art and design at KS1 and communication difficulties

Children with communication difficulties may need help understanding new vocabulary or a different use of familiar words such as form, pattern and space.

You can:

• Avoid letting vocabulary get in the way of the creative process; help the pupil understand that words can have different meanings and use visual clues to what new words mean in context.
• Allow time for the pupil to choose materials, colours and so on.
• Make instructions as practical as possible - don’t just talk through the process.
