Art and design at KS1 and physical impairment

Begin by reading the information on challenges faced by physically impaired children across the curriculum and at all levels, plus the suggestions for inclusion.

These pages looks at the physical issues you will need to consider when including a physically impaired child in the classroom. For communication aids read the communication difficulties section.

Throughout KS1 and 2 in art and design the things to consider will be similar, the differences are in the enhanced level of support needed and the opportunities that can be created.  Also read the information on art and design at P levels 4-8

You can:

  • Aim to involve the pupil in as much activity as possible through practical input and decision-making.  Encourage them to choose options or join discussions.
  • Make sure that any activity is inclusive through its differentiated content, if necessary and good physical access.
  • Make sure that the minimum physical effort is required for creating models - use light, malleable materials.
  • Try digital camera work as this is physically easy to access, with adapted equipment such as a firm stand for the camera, a cable-switch and a timer.
