Art and design at KS2 and communication difficulties
At KS2 the communication difficulties are similar to KS1 but with an increased need to communicate ideas about their own and others' approaches and methods, and how they might develop their work.
You can:
- Support new vocabulary with a list of visual and practical examples, by pre-programmed communication aids, or using symbols, signing or whatever is needed.
- Let pupils communicate their ideas through yes/no answers, if it helps, but allow for plenty of time and preparation.
- Don’t let the concept of commenting on artwork prevent pupils from enjoying the freedom and creativity of art and design.
- Encourage recording on paper, which could be as simple as smiley and sad faces.
