Art and design at KS3 and physical impairment
The challenges at KS3 are similar to those of KS1 and KS2. By now the pupil will probably have established which art and design activities they can do and enjoy and which aren’t suitable, for physical reasons. Recording their processes and analyses may need support and time.
You can:
- Use assistive technology for pupils with severe physical impairments to access and record their work. For less severe physical impairments make sure the pupil has the space and equipment they need, and is able to take a time-out rest when physically tired.
- Try a voice-recognition programme for physically recording work, or have someone transcribe, if a digital approach is not an option.
- Use digital photography to create personalised artwork and also to record any art activities as an artwork in itself. Try using software such as Photoshop for the pupil to alter their images and context, to make original images.
- Share websites on physical impairment and art. They feature some inspirational work and life stories, such as The Amazing Art of Disabled Artists.
