Art and design and physical impairment at P level 5

At P level 5 there is an increased focus on choosing activities and applying techniques. The pupil is likely to choose activities they can do more easily, and will need support to experience the whole range.

Experiencing the malleability of materials will be difficult for those pupils who have limited hand movement.

You can:

  • Help pupils make choices by reminding them of previous activities. Allow them to experience the activity again, remembering the level of physical effort and independence required.
  • To help them work with materials, focus initially on very malleable ones which the pupil’s whole hand can explore, such as gloop (made from cornflour and water) or damp sand. Progress to saltdough, soft playdough or moist clay, supporting the pupil’s hand. Or let them use their feet too. Find out what they’d like to make and support them.
  • For sticking surfaces together, use glue which is easy to apply – avoid glue sticks, brushes or spatulas are easier.
