Art and design and physical impairment at P level 4

The challenges, and suggestions, for physically impaired children in art and design are the same as those in subjects across the curriculum so read this information first.

You can:

  • Think about access issues for each activity. The pupil may require additional space for equipment and may need to participate in a completely different way to other pupils.  For example a wheelchair user may find a standing frame helps them extend their reach to work on a large project.
  • Consider shorter paintbrushes, with a handle grips or a think-handled paintbrush. Block-scissors require only a pressing movement rather than fine motor control.
  • Try to keep any hand-over-hand support to a minimum so that the pupil is in control.
  • Be consistent when demonstrating techniques; the pupil may find it hard to develop their physical memory.
