Art and design and visual impairment at P level 7
This level continues the work at P level 6, on creativity as a form of communication. It is much harder for a child with no functional sight to express emotion through their work as they can only respond to physical resources. If they cannot feel what they create, then the activity is meaningless for them.
You can:
- Talk about moods and feelings, building up a vocabulary of appropriate words that will develop the link between creativity and communication. Discuss what moods feel like, and how they might be physically represented in models or artwork. Appropriate music can help make this link.
- Focus on aspects of artwork that the pupil can knowingly create, such as textured ‘pictures’ using different materials, or using modelling material where the purpose is self expression not creating a likeness to something.
- For the pupil with some functional vision ensure that the scale of their work is large enough for them to see, encourage bright colours which can be seen more easily, and encourage the pupil to use contrasting colours so the effect is more visible.
