Art and design and visual impairment at P level 6
At P level 6 the pupil will need to understand the creative process and to develop new skills. To create something, you need an idea of what it will be. For the child with no sight this will be limited to what they have experienced through touch.
You can:
- Introduce the concept of art for its own sake, that things don’t need to be functional or represent something concrete. Look at different pictures – enlarged for the pupil with functional vision, or ornaments, models and sculptures for the pupil without sight.
- Encourage creativity by experimenting with different moods through other sensory prompts such as music or smell. Try to identify how the child feels with different sorts of sensory input.
- Use different media (as in P Level 5 Art and Design) – florescent card and paint, UV light, digital photography. Be creative about displaying the pupil’s artwork. Yhink of using spotlights with different coloured gels, or projecting images onto it, static or moving.
