Art and design and autistic spectrum disorder at P level 5

P Level 5 requires more independence in selecting equipment and becoming familiar with techniques. Autistic children may find choosing difficult. They may struggle with fine motor control (due to sensory processing issues) and perseverance.
You can:
- Approach choice of equipment through its functionality; refresh the pupil’s memory with a description of how they’ve already used the tools. Limit the choice to one of two options, at first.
- Model how to use equipment which is not very familiar, and explain why they are doing this in this way.
- Present model-making as a step-by-step process, perhaps helped by photographs of the stages, for the pupil to refer to.
