Art and design in key stage 2
The National Curriculum is statutory in all maintained, mainstream schools up to and including key stage 4. An appropriate version of the curriculum is used in maintained special schools. Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers years 3-6, children aged 8-11.
Successful inclusion of disabled children depends on the attitude of the school, the teacher and the other pupils. It is essential that non-disabled children understand the need for tolerance of everyone, whatever their abilities. This acceptance of other children’s differences will not happen by chance: it needs to underpin everything the school says and does.
Many children who have one condition will also have another, in which the disability with the most impact needs to be considered first.
In art and design at KS2, children work in the following areas of knowledge, skills and understanding:
Exploring and developing ideas
- Recording from experience, imagination and first-hand observation
- Exploring ideas for different purposes
- Questioning, observing and selecting ideas to use in their work
- Collecting visual and other information to help develop ideas
Investigating and making art, craft and design
- Investigating and combining visual and tactile qualities and matching to the purpose
- Applying experiences of materials and processes, including drawing, developing control of tools and techniques
- Using a variety of methods and approaches to communicate observations, ideas and feelings, and to design and make images and artefacts
Evaluating and developing work
- Comparing ideas, methods and approaches in their own and others’ work and saying what they think and feel about them
- Adapting their work according to their views and describing how they might develop it further
Knowledge and understanding
- Visual and tactile elements including colour, pattern and texture, line , shape, form and space, and how these elements can be combined and organised for different purposes
- Materials and processes used in art, craft and design and how these can be matched to ideas and intentions
- The roles and purposes of artists, craftspeople and designers working in different times and cultures (Western Europe and the wider world)
During KS2 pupils develop their creativity and imagination through more complex activities. These help to build on their skills and improve their control of materials, tools and techniques. They increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art, craft and design in different times and cultures. They become more confident in using visual and tactile elements, materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think.
The challenges listed under KS1 still apply but there are additional things to consider for children with:
- Autism spectrum disorder focussing on Asperger’s syndrome
- Physical impairment
- Visual impairment
- Hearing impairment
- Dyslexia
- Communication difficulties
