Literacy: visual impairment

The main literacy challenges for early years children with a visual impairment are:

  • Gaining understanding from stories or texts
  • Making controlled, meaningful marks and writing
  • Hand-eye co-ordination

You can:

  • Read the tips for helping visually impaired children with Literacy at P levels 4-8.
  • Create book bags full of props, sounds and smells that bring a story to life.
  • Use puppets and objects to tell a story.
  • Encourage the child to listen to audio books - provide a quiet area with headphone sets.
  • Encourage dressing up and role play to act out stories or create their own.
