Literacy: visual impairment
The main literacy challenges for early years children with a visual impairment are:
- Gaining understanding from stories or texts
- Making controlled, meaningful marks and writing
- Hand-eye co-ordination
You can:
- Read the tips for helping visually impaired children with Literacy at P levels 4-8.
- Create book bags full of props, sounds and smells that bring a story to life.
- Use puppets and objects to tell a story.
- Encourage the child to listen to audio books - provide a quiet area with headphone sets.
- Encourage dressing up and role play to act out stories or create their own.
