English and children with autism at P level 6

Autism spectrum disorders

P level 6 requires a greater level of language development, working with others and reading. The social communication skills will be a challenge and turn-taking games will probably still be needed.

 You can

  • Work on a sequence of two or three pictures which tell a very clear story. For example
  1. A child looks out of the window at the rain.
  2. The child puts on wellies and coat.
  3. The child jumps in puddles.
  • Practise group tasks where each child has a different 2D shape which needs to be put onto an outline. Who has the circle? Who has the square? Try the same thing with letters, numbers, names of children in the group or facial expressions.
  • Try sorting games, for example using an educational resource called ‘sorting bears’ and choosing how to sort them.
